So, are we off the hook somehow—is everything pre-ordained by cosmic fate?

Does nothing we do matter?

Hardly.

The passage goes on to remind that the process of salvation includes “regeneration” and “renewal”—and this renewal is through the Holy Spirit.

Yes (and thankfully) there are supernatural forces at work drawing us to Him.

But renewal speaks of new things, new life, change, rebirth. Things renewed are different than before.

It’s not enough to receive salvation and speak of it in the past tense as though it were an event already transpired.

How many of us have continued to pick up the damaging, addicting drink or drug after having been supposedly washed white as snow?

Our actions matter, and curiously, we have complete choice in them even after salvation.

And so, it is desperately necessary to hold firm to the truths of the faith and to live in daily surrender to them.

The tenants of AA and other programs serve us well in reminding of our daily reprieve contingent on the growth of our spiritual condition.

Am I walking with my Maker or sitting on my butt?

Actions matter.
