Things Above
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
Colossians 3:1
No pressure. Just seek after the things from Christ, in heaven, at the right hand of God.
I read this kind of verse and it’s easy to dismiss it in a nice, very Christian and inadvertent way.
I let it soak in for an appropriate amount of time. Say a prayer about it—for it to sink in and change me, maybe.
And move on.
But I’m missing the heart of the matter. If this stuff is real, I have to get past the formality and I have to get over the way it was written in order to get to the heart of what it means for the actual one life that I am currently enrolled in.
If we say we believe, where is the evidence? Am I crouched down in my everyday living, biding my time? Or am I purposeful and persistent—straining for what I should be directing my thoughts and actions toward?
My past becomes a stark reminder of where I will drift if I become the center of my universe again. My only hope is to seek after the hope of glory, the hope of Christ, the things that are above and beyond what I can even understand.
God, help me understand enough to be ok with not understanding it all.
