Taking Inventory

Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord!

Lamentations‬ ‭3‬:‭40

Logic may not give us eyes to see as far as we’d like into our sober future, but reason should guide us as we repair our past.

We aren’t exempt from human decency and self-examination just because we’ve been through the wringer. On the contrary, we have more work to do than most.

The idea of a moral inventory is a scary prospect if we truly consider it. And it’s easy to dust our past under the rug in an effort to lean forward in the present.

This is a half-truth with teeth.

What good will it do us to ignore the very real harm we have done? We ought not dwell on this longer than necessary, but we should bring it into the light for as long as need be to conquer it.

It did me good to walk through my life with a friend, to share my shortcomings, my sins, my story with an understanding and empathetic man.

The things that brought us to addiction need to be cast out, and we need help in examining and moving past them.

Our inventory and our story to this point give us the means by which we can move away from the wreckage of our past.

God, help me walk away from who I have been and acknowledge the extent of my need for a new life.
