Heart Help
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
1 John 4:4
I have yet to graduate from needing simple reminders. The very essence of sobriety demands the absence of doing things that are socially acceptable, fun in moderation and attractive from a distance.
How quickly we forget how unlike this idea our experiences were. We wouldn’t have gone through the wringer if it had been problem free.
My own self-deception knows no bounds, and is at its best when I separate myself from others. I’ve heard it said that that is what the “i-s-m” stands for in alcohol-ism.
I separate myself.
That’s the critical component to watch for in sobriety. Am I pointing out the differences between myself and others? Or am I looking for our common bonds?
Am I reinforcing the desire to be unique? Or relishing in the common salvation?
Sobriety can feel overwhelming. It can seem like a never ending quest to feel ok again. It’s like this when I forget to take myself out of the center.
I got into trouble trying to please myself 24-7. I drifted from the way trying to chart my own course.
But the truth I cannot forget is that He who gave me a second chance lives in me and will steer me to the extent that I look to Him for direction.
Am I looking for help in the right place?
